It’s an exciting time for Coldstream! We’re thrilled to share some fantastic news about the former Hirsel Golf Club, once nicknamed the “Augusta of the Borders”. Following its recent closure, a group of dedicated people are working hard on a grassroots effort to bring golf back to the area, and it’s being developed with the whole community in mind. This information was first shared in the Coldstream Community Newsletter, a publication provided by the Coldstream Gateway Association.

A New Golf Experience Awaits

While full details are still to be released, it has been announced that the new course will provide reduced yet more accessible layout. Perfect for people who want to learn, practice or just enjoy a casual round within the stunning grounds of the Hirsel estate. A great addition to the fantastic Golf offerings in the Scottish Borders & Northumberland, but more importantly bringing Golf back to Coldstream.

“The former 5th, 6th, and 7th holes will be run for practice, learning, and enjoyment,” said Michael Home. The work is underway and the greens and fairways are expected to be ready in Autumn 2025. He added that “time slots will be available to book to exclusively enjoy this facility, whether you wish to practice your long irons, pitch and putt, or maybe play for the very first time.”

In addition to the re introduction of Golf new grass paths are being created from “Spa Well Bridge”, and the existing public footpaths are being connected opening up walking routes within the estate. This means you’ll be able to enjoy a scenic walk even if you’re not playing golf and enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

Visitors will also see a renewed focus on the local environment. Non native trees like the Leylandii are being removed, however for each single tree removed three broad leafed species will be added. These in turn will provide a great improvement to the landscape, environment and biodiversity. This development will not only give us a new place to play, but it will also enhance the natural beauty of the area for everyone to enjoy.
