How Coldstream Holiday Park Earned its Pollinator Patch Award

It’s a “Blooming Marvellous” Monday at Coldstream Holiday Park! We are incredibly proud to announce that our park has been recognised with the prestigious David Bellamy Pollinator Patch award as part of the 2025 Pledge for Nature. This award is a testament to our team’s hard work and commitment to creating a thriving environment for Britain’s wildlife.

Our success in this challenge is thanks to our extensive and well-managed planting. We’ve introduced a variety of species, with a special focus on creating a rich, welcoming habitat for pollinators. A key part of this effort has been cultivating an extensive area of clover, which our advisor, Chris, noted has created an excellent forage source. This has led to a remarkable abundance of insects, which are vital for a healthy ecosystem.

This focus on biodiversity has had a ripple effect throughout the park. The thriving insect population has, in turn, supported our local wildlife, including a flourishing population of swallows. We are also committed to the “Special Species” challenge to help protect swallows, swifts, and martins, creating new nesting opportunities and managing the environment to support them.

A huge well done to Brodie, for his efficient and sympathetic management of the grounds, which has dramatically increased our park’s biodiversity. The hard work of the entire team at Coldstream Holiday Park has not only helped us achieve this award but has also enhanced the beautiful natural amenities for all our visitors to enjoy.

Sam has a life long interest in wildlife, particularly birds, and since moving to Coldstream in 2021 has been getting to know the birds, mammals, plants and some insects in her local patch along the Tweed, in the Lees and The Hirsel. Already this year she has recorded over eighty bird species in the borders area and expects to see around 30 species whenever she is out and about. She is a familiar figure in the town with her binoculars around her neck and many locals now share their sightings with her.

Having been inspired by a winter birdwatching trip in Bali Sam is now planning to bring wildlife walks to Coldstream and the surrounding area to share her knowledge and help people learn more about our beautiful countryside.

She is starting small and will be running short circular walks from the campsite in April and May. Starting at 8:30 (the birds are most active in the morning) the walks will last approximately 1 hour and are about 1.5 miles long. The route is mostly flat with plenty of benches on the way, but most of it is on trail, so you will need suitable shoes. There will be some binoculars available, but if you have your own please bring them along.

On the walk you will see and/or hear around about 30 species of birds – this will include many of the summer visitors as they arrive for the summer. Many of these visitors are quite elusive as the leaves come out, but Sam will share some great tips for learning bird song as well identifying birds by sight. Interwoven with this knowledge will be some tall tales – you will also find out which bird is the tell-tale-tit, why the goldcrest is king of the birds, how a football match defined the border and much more…………..

4. Autumn (September to November):
   • Autumn nights are cooler and more comfortable for stargazing, and the skies remain relatively clear.
   • The Andromeda Galaxy is often visible in the autumn sky, and the Pleiades star cluster is a prominent target.
   • Early autumn features the Draconid and Orionid meteor showers.
5. Year-Round Considerations:
   • The best time for stargazing also depends on your location and local weather patterns. Some regions may have more favourable conditions in certain seasons.
   • It’s important to check the moon’s phase when planning stargazing outings. New moon nights are best for observing faint objects, while a full moon can wash out fainter stars and objects.

Using tools like stargazing apps and star charts can help you identify and locate celestial objects throughout the year.

Tweed Bank Walk

Distance: 4km Time: 1 – 1:30 hrs

From the wooden gate on the parks boundary turn left and follow the rough path along the top of the wooded embankment, after a couple of hundred meters you will see a sign with a small fork in the path. Follow the right hand path on the fork and cut across the trimmed grass lawn of the estate, please do not wander further up the lawn. Once across the path continues raised above the banks of the Tweed, follow this as signposted until you reach the Anglers Lodge. To avoid access issues you can follow the path down behind the anglers lodge into open fields with tracks running around the outer edge. From here you can turn left to head into Coldstream or continue to the right for the full Tweed Bank circuit. The gallery below can be used as a useful visual guide.

Scenic Route into Coldstream

Distance: 1km Time: 15 – 20 minutes

As per the Tweed Bank Walk, from the wooden gate on the parks boundary turn left and follow the rough path along the top of the wooded embankment, after a couple of hundred meters you will see a sign with a small fork in the path. Here take the left hand path on the fork and follow the path and signposts, the path will lead you through an orchard with sandstone wall running along its right hand side, at the top of this path you will find an old Ice House with a splendid pine growing on top of it, continue along the path to reach the road, a gate house and finally the main road leading into Coldstream. Why take the challenge? Pollinating insects are vital for the health of the countryside. Pollinators fly from flower to flower collecting pollen and nectar as they go, they transport pollen to other flowers allowing the flower to fertilise and grow seeds. These seeds will then grow into a new plant and flower for the process to start over. In Europe, about 84% of crop species production depends on pollination, and nearly 80% of wild plants rely solely on insect pollinators. We really would be lost without them and we are excited to help the magnificent pollinators thrive. They are fascinating and beautiful creatures to watch and will help create a vibrant natural environment in our holiday park for all to enjoy.

What’s Next? Our first step of the challenge is to decide what type of pollinator patches we are going to add and where we are going to add them.
