Coldstream Holiday Park Celebrates “Paws on the Park” with a Barking Success

Sam has a life long interest in wildlife, particularly birds, and since moving to Coldstream in 2021 has been getting to know the birds, mammals, plants and some insects in her local patch along the Tweed, in the Lees and The Hirsel. Already this year she has recorded over eighty bird species in the borders area and expects to see around 30 species whenever she is out and about. She is a familiar figure in the town with her binoculars around her neck and many locals now share their sightings with her.

Having been inspired by a winter birdwatching trip in Bali Sam is now planning to bring wildlife walks to Coldstream and the surrounding area to share her knowledge and help people learn more about our beautiful countryside.

She is starting small and will be running short circular walks from the campsite in April and May. Starting at 8:30 (the birds are most active in the morning) the walks will last approximately 1 hour and are about 1.5 miles long. The route is mostly flat with plenty of benches on the way, but most of it is on trail, so you will need suitable shoes. There will be some binoculars available, but if you have your own please bring them along.

On the walk you will see and/or hear around about 30 species of birds – this will include many of the summer visitors as they arrive for the summer. Many of these visitors are quite elusive as the leaves come out, but Sam will share some great tips for learning bird song as well identifying birds by sight. Interwoven with this knowledge will be some tall tales – you will also find out which bird is the tell-tale-tit, why the goldcrest is king of the birds, how a football match defined the border and much more…………..

The first two walks are a trial, so will be free, although pre-booking is required as places are limited to 6 people. Book here:

Sam also leads walks at St Abbs Head in conjunction with the Berwickshire Marine Reserve. Provisional dates for these are May 22nd and June 18th.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about Coldstream Holiday Park and start planning your dream vacation.

School Holidays: Scottish schools will be on half-term break from February 10th to 14th.

Excitement is building for the 2024 Tour of Britain, with the first stage offering a thrilling showcase of the Scottish Borders, Tuesday the 3rd of September.

The race kicks off in Kelso, heading east along the beautiful River Tweed toward Coldstream, the athletes will pass the entrance of Coldstream Holiday Park before travelling along the high street in Coldstream Centre. From there, the riders will turn north, weaving through Greenlaw, Gordon, and Smailholm, before tackling the first ascent at Scott’s View—a scenic climb with a 2.5-kilometre (1.6-mile) stretch averaging a 2.5% incline.

Within the next 10 kilometres (6 miles), the riders face a tougher challenge with a 2-kilometre (1.2-mile) climb up to Dingleton in the Eildon Hills, featuring a 6.2% average gradient. The route then heads south to Denholm, where the riders will climb Dunion Hill, a 3-kilometre (1.9-mile) ascent at a 5.4% incline, before descending into Jedburgh and returning to Kelso along the River Teviot.

In an exciting twist, the riders will repeat the Melrose sprint and the King of the Mountains climbs at Scott’s View and Dingleton, with the latter just 23 kilometres (14.3 miles) from the cobbled finish in Kelso. This stage promises a thrilling chase to the finish line and provides spectators in Kelso, Melrose, and at the iconic climbs of Scott’s View and Dingleton the unique opportunity to see the race in action twice.

Throughout the stage, there are three intermediate sprints and opportunities for time bonuses and points towards the sprinters’ jersey. The sprints take place in Melrose, Kelso, and then Melrose again at 75 kilometres (46.6 miles), 128 kilometres (79.5 miles), and 156 kilometres (96.9 miles) into the route, respectively.

Spectating:

There are loads of great options in Coldstream for spectating the race, including at the entrance of Coldstream Holiday Park, the Hirsel, , The Hight Street, Henderson Park and the Besom. Keep an eye out for more details in the coming weeks, including stage timings and the competing teams.
