It’s an exciting time for Coldstream! We’re thrilled to share some fantastic news about the former Hirsel Golf Club, once nicknamed the “Augusta of the Borders”. Following its recent closure, a group of dedicated people are working hard on a grassroots effort to bring golf back to the area, and it’s being developed with the whole community in mind. This information was first shared in the Coldstream Community Newsletter, a publication provided by the Coldstream Gateway Association.

A New Golf Experience Awaits

While full details are still to be released, it has been announced that the new course will provide reduced yet more accessible layout. Perfect for people who want to learn, practice or just enjoy a casual round within the stunning grounds of the Hirsel estate. A great addition to the fantastic Golf offerings in the Scottish Borders & Northumberland, but more importantly bringing Golf back to Coldstream.

“The former 5th, 6th, and 7th holes will be run for practice, learning, and enjoyment,” said Michael Home. The work is underway and the greens and fairways are expected to be ready in Autumn 2025. He added that “time slots will be available to book to exclusively enjoy this facility, whether you wish to practice your long irons, pitch and putt, or maybe play for the very first time.”

In addition to the re introduction of Golf new grass paths are being created from “Spa Well Bridge”, and the existing public footpaths are being connected opening up walking routes within the estate. This means you’ll be able to enjoy a scenic walk even if you’re not playing golf and enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

Visitors will also see a renewed focus on the local environment. Non native trees like the Leylandii are being removed, however for each single tree removed three broad leafed species will be added. These in turn will provide a great improvement to the landscape, environment and biodiversity. This development will not only give us a new place to play, but it will also enhance the natural beauty of the area for everyone to enjoy.

Head to Paxton House in Berwick Upon Tweed, embark on a spine-tingling adventure with their seasonal Halloween Trail through the eerie, atmospheric woodlands. Perfect for families and little ghouls, the trail runs from 11am to 3pm, offering a chance to explore the grounds while following clues and surprises along the way. Dressing up is highly encouraged, so don your best costumes and get ready for a day of fun and frights. The Famous Scarycrow Trail 2024 – Ford & Etal

Follow the trail of weird and wonderful ‘Scarycrows’ around the villages, awarding them scores as you go. Pick up a trail map and score sheet from one of the village shops, Heatherslaw railway and the Visitor Centre at Heatherslaw, or you can download a trail map here from Thursday 24th October. Hand in the sheet at any of the same venues when you have finished the trail. We’ll add the totals together at the end of the week to determine the winning Scarycrow 2024! The decision is yours.

So far this year we have seen a remarkable increase in the number of guests exploring our picturesque landscapes under their own steam. The dramatic increase in the number of guests arriving by bike has brought a vibrant, adventurous and eco-friendly dimension to tourism in Coldstream. So far Coldstream Holiday Park have welcomed enthusiastic cyclists from Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK undertaking memorable journeys, peddling the scenic Coast and Castles Route, and beyond.

The Coast and Castles Route has become a beacon for cycling aficionados. This iconic trail, stretching from Tynemouth along the breathtaking coastline and past historic castles and towns, has seen an influx of international visitors. The brand new Kirkpatrick cycle route is of course a great edition, running across the south of Scotland from Port Patrick to Eyemouth, stopping at towns along the way including Coldstream. In addition to guests from the UK cyclists from Germany and the Netherlands, renowned for their biking culture, have been particularly drawn to the route. Many taking advantage of the ferry routes to Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The appeal of Scotland’s natural beauty and rich history is undeniable, and this year, it has inspired some truly epic cycling adventures. Notably, we’ve hosted Dutch guests who undertook an eight-week journey around the south of Scotland. This extensive tour showcased the diverse landscapes, from the rolling hills and verdant valleys to the tranquil lochs and charming villages. The couple enjoyed the experience so much saying:

“A journey by bike allows you to connect much more to the landscape”.

Today alone we have spoken to three teams, another Dutch and English team travelling the Coast and Castles route and One inspiring couple who are cycling from Durness in the far north of Scotland all the way to their home in North Yorkshire. Quite the Journey!

Environmentally, pedal powered tourism reduces the carbon footprint associated with travel, promoting a greener and more sustainable tourism industry. Economically, Cycling supports local businesses, from bike rental shops and repair services to cafes and B&Bs that cater to weary cyclists who need to source most of their food as they travel. Socially, it fosters a sense of community and shared purpose among locals and visitors alike, united by a love for cycling and the great outdoors.

The award winning Alnwick Garden Winter Light Trail is back for 2023! This year the fantastic light trail set in the iconic Alnwick Gardens will run from the 13th of November till the 7th of January.
