The gateway to the Borders of old.

The Coldstream Guards

Robert Burns

Scotland‘s national bard visited Coldstream in 1787. He crossed the Coldstream bridge and with his first step onto English soil he knelt and prayed for the blessing of his native Scotland "O Scotia! My dear, my native soil! For whom my warmest wish to heaven is sent! Long may thy hardy sons of rustic toil be blest with health, and peace, and sweet content." The moment is commemorated with a plaque on the bridge and an interpretation board near Marjoribanks monument.

Robert Burns work is celebrated worldwide, especially for Burns Night which falls on the 25th of January each year. A night to celebrate contribution to Scottish Culture. No Burns night is complete without some haggis and a wee dram of whisky.

Old Marriage House

Coldstream ,the historic gateway to Scotland, enjoys a long tradition of couples coming here to get married.

At the Scottish end of the bridge stands the red roofed 18th century Old Marriage House, which rivalled Gretna Green for ‘irregular’ marriages, valid in Scots law.

Buildings, Bridges & Monuments

Walking over the bridge into Scotland, follow in the steps of the Stone of Destiny returning home from Westminster Abbey, passing Robert Burns stepping into England for the first time, all under the gaze of Charles Majoribanks looking down from his monument.

Reimagine how we lived across the centuries, across the classes. Gunsgreen House, the palace built by a smuggler with hideaways to uncover. Paxton House, in classical Palladian style, and the finest example in Britain. Maderstone House, the supreme county house of Edwardian Scotland, with domestic quarters linking up the only silver staircase in the world to opulent staterooms.
